Atheists are almost all people who have chosen to examine their views on the prevailing religion and have decided, based on all available evidence, that the existence of any gods is extremely unlikely.
This is what unites atheists and this only: a conviction that god does not exist.
As a result the people you might meet here will have a wide variety of other beliefs, pet causes, and viewpoints you may not agree with.
Please take the time to consider the following points very carefully:
- Being an atheist does not necessarily make you “Green” and environmentally aware.
- Being an atheist does not make you pro-choice, or pro-life.
- Being an atheist does not determine your political allegiance to your local right or left wing party.
- Being an atheist doesn’t guarantee you will also be a vegan.
- Being an atheist doesn’t mean you’re a communist.
You get the point!
Atheism is not a package holiday of viewpoints, but a single area of agreement. You have to realise before you join, that you may have to work alongside people who have vastly different beliefs from you, and that if you cannot unite to accomplish a common goal, this community is not for you.
In order to participate in this community you must be able to abide by the following rules:
Your opinions are your own. Other people will think differently. You agree to be tolerant of both the views of others, and their right to have a different opinion.
Strong opinions are fine, strong language is not. Don’t swear at other members and abuse them. Don’t hurl insults when you run out of arguments. If you want to use a little humour and sarcasm to make a point, that’s fine. If you need to attack the parentage of someone to try and shore up your case, then you need to drop it and cool off.
If you and another member cannot agree, and cannot walk away, you have a dispute.
If you have a dispute, it goes to moderation. Moderation will do what is best for the community. If you cannot abide by that, it is time for you to move on.
Believers might drop by to discuss things. Please extend them the same courtesy as other members; which is to say feel free to tear their belief apart, but that doesn’t extend into taking personal shots at them.
None of the following, at all:
- Racism (note that this is defined as the colour of skin or place of birth, not someone’s cultural beliefs. Comments on the cultural norms and beliefs of others are fine)
- Sexism (as above, this applies to gender, not culture)
- Attacks on Sexuality (no singling out LGBT people, or heterosexuals for general abuse)
- Threats
If any of these appear in your comments on the community forum, the moderator will contact you to discuss context and appropriateness. Actions will be determined based on intent.
Just so that you know beforehand this is a community which will enforce censorship where moderators feel it is for the benefit of the community as a whole. Much as we like free speech, comments which are in violation of the above or which are designed to disrupt the efforts of Godless heathens may be removed.
If you are angry that a post has been deleted, please contact the moderators. If you need to turn deleted posts into a public drama then you’ll find your account suspended.
We believe that these rules are in the best interests of harmony within the community.
We all have enough to do fighting religion without having to fend off those atheists who don’t play well with others.
