Atheists are a diverse lot. This community is for a particular subset of atheists.
Godless Heathens agree on and believe in the following things:
Religion is bad in all of its forms. It does psychological and financial damage, but most of all it wastes time from the one and only life you get. Religious people are pretty diverse, from “true believers” and fanatics to those who are only nominal. We recognise this, and want to help those who might be receptive to atheism to get a better life.
Appeasement never works. Working with the moderate religious groups is of no value. In fact, it undermines what we are saying and makes us more prone to hypocrisy in our actions. We don’t want that, and we will not work on co-operative or compromising projects.
God doesn’t exist. Nor does an afterlife, an intelligent designer, or anything of that ilk. How we determine what is and is not real, is by conducting experiments using the scientific method. Anything that is not proven through repeatable experimentation using a double blind test can be reasonably doubted. You may choose to believe regardless of proof, but that doesn’t make you right.
Science is not a religion. Nor does science refer to the body of knowledge that has been gathered by humanity. It is the method by which we investigate our universe around us, and it is so far the best tool we have in order to do so. Individual experiments can be flawed and poorly conducted. This does not mean science is flawed or can’t measure things. It means that an example of poorly thought out science was conducted. The scientific method creates a constantly evolving body of knowledge with which we can make informed decisions on the universe.
Evolution happened and keeps happening. Evolutionary theory may not be perfect, but the fact of evolution is as well established as our heliocentric solar system.
Discrimination is more complex than most people think. Religious discrimination is often held up alongside racism and homophobia. It is not the same thing. Religion is a strongly held opinion; race, gender and sexuality are with you from birth and not of your choosing. It is fine to discriminate against an opinion you disagree with, it is not acceptable to discriminate against people because of genetic factors.
Philosophy doesn’t accomplish much. If you wish to discuss what reality is and can there even be an objective reality, you are in the wrong place. Any discussions on What is Truth? are going to quickly drop off the board. We focus on the practical world, as we know and experience it.
If these beliefs are not shared by or tolerated by you, you may want to re-consider joining this group, or work out a way in which you can still participate while respecting the opinions above.
